We live by the saying that you should go on a hot air balloon ride at least once in your life. It offers a tranquil and scenic experience like no other—the rustic vibes, the breeze, and the feeling of flight are immaculate!
So if you want to add riding hot air balloons to your bucket list, read on! We have all the tips to make your ride a breeze and the best destinations for fantastic views.
Best Time To Go
Hot air balloons often happen in the wee hours of the morning when temperatures are cool and you witness a more spectacular sunrise on air and the wind conditions aren’t as strong as the rest of the day. Hot air balloon rides are sensitive to the weather, so if the wind is stronger than usual, they may be canceled for safety reasons.
It’s essential to book your trip in advance so you can assure you’ll have a spot. Wearing a hat or cap, especially when you’re near the gas jets, is highly recommended. It can get really hot there, so the extra layer of protection is a big help.
There are no fixed routes for hot air balloon rides this means your pilot will follow where the wind condition is best, so you might wonder where will get picked up after the flight. The Air ballooning touring company vehicles will follow up to pick you up from where you land.
You can choose between a sunrise or a sunset package. The sunrise package has breakfast, while the sunset package can have either afternoon tea or dinner!
Pick up at the hotel followed by a short introduction.
Make our way to the Air ballooning Safaris located 1.5 hour on the north of Johannesburg.
The Classic Hot Air Balloon Flight
The classic balloon flight is the more traditional experience, and flies over the Cradle of Humankind or the Magaliesberg Mountains – just depends on where the wind blows. Although near Johannesburg, green fields, farm dams & distant mountains become your 360 degree panorama. The entire experience covers approximately 3 hours. The morning’s outline for the Classic Balloon Experience goes as follows:
The Safari Hot Air Balloon Flight
The Safari Flight experience offers passengers a more ‘African safar’ experience. The flight launches from inside the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve (near Johannesburg) and gives passengers the opportunity to view game from the air.
Sparkling wine & Orange Juice
After Landing you are recovered by vehicle
The flights eventually normally drift out the boundries of the reserves sometimes over other reserves of the surrounding countryside. About 80% of the flights have had sightings of at least 2 of the ‘Big Five’ during the flight. The morning’s plan takes about 3 – 4 hours and looks something like this:
From your accommodation in Johannesburg or Pretoria at 04:00am for a morning game drive and 15:30pm for an afternoon air balloon flight

After this wonderful experience you will be dropped at your hotel in Johannesburg or Pretoria
