Getting to Pilanesberg is relatively easy, with various transport options available depending on your preference and budget. By car, Pilanesberg is around two hours drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The most direct route is via the N4 highway, which takes you straight to the reserve's entrance gate. If you're renting a car, be sure to check if your rental agency allows their vehicles to be driven on gravel roads as some areas of the reserve require it.
Alternatively, you can take a shuttle or private transfer service from Johannesburg or Pretoria to Pilanesberg. This option is particularly convenient if you don't want to drive yourself. Another option is to fly to Pilanesberg International Airport, located just outside the reserve. The airport offers flights from various destinations, including Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg. From the airport, you can take a taxi or arrange a transfer to your accommodation within the reserve.
Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino), as well as other wildlife such as cheetahs, wild dogs, zebras, giraffes, and hyenas.
Madikwe Game Reserve has a diverse birdlife, with over 350 species of birds including the ostrich, kori bustard, and yellow-throated sandgrouse. It's also a great place to spot raptors such as the African fish eagle and martial eagle.
The best time to visit Madikwe Game Reserve is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. This is when the vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot wildlife. It's also cooler during this time, which is more comfortable for both wildlife and visitors. The winter months (June to August) are particularly popular for game viewing as the animals tend to congregate around the remaining water sources. However, it's important to note that this is also peak season, so accommodation may be more expensive and booking in advance is recommended.
