If you're driving from Windhoek, take the B1 south towards Mariental and then continue on the C12 until you reach the canyon. The journey should take around 7-8 hours, depending on how many stops you make along the way. You can also book a guided tour of Fish River Canyon.
There are several tour operators that offer trips to the canyon, ranging from day trips to multi-day tours. Another option is to take a domestic flight to the nearby town of Keetmanshoop and then hire a car to drive to Fish River Canyon. Air Namibia operates regular flights between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop, which take around 1 hour. Once you've arrived in Keetmanshoop, it's a 2-3 hour drive to the canyon.
Wildlife in Fish River Canyon includes Hartmann's mountain zebra, kudu, klipspringer, baboons, leopards, and a variety of bird species such as eagles, vultures, and ostriches.

Best Time to Visit The best time to visit Fish River Canyon is during the cooler months of May to September. It's important to note that the canyon is closed for hiking during the hot summer months of October to April. It’s because of the high temperatures and risk of dehydration. Additionally, visiting during the winter months allows for clearer skies and better visibility, making for stunning panoramic views of the canyon.
There are several accommodations available at Fish River Canyon, including lodges, campsites, and guesthouses. Examples include the Canyon Lodge, the Canyon Village, and the Hobas Campsite, which is located near the canyon's main viewpoint.
There are several activities to do in Fish River Canyon, including hiking, sightseeing, and stargazing. The most popular activity is hiking the canyon, which takes 4-5 days and requires a permit. For those who prefer a shorter hike, there are day hikes available as well. Stargazing is also a popular activity due to the clear skies at night. Additionally, visitors can explore nearby hot springs, take a guided tour, or visit the nearby town of Keetmanshoop.
Arrive early to beat the heat and crowds at Fish River Canyon. The best views are from the main lookout point and hiking the canyon is only permitted during the cooler months.
