Sossusvlei is located in the southern part of the Namib Desert in Namibia. Specifically, it is situated within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, which is known for its stunning desert landscapes.
Sossusvlei is famous for its towering red sand dunes, including the iconic Dune 45, and its unique desert landscape which attracts photographers, hikers, and tourists from all over the world.
Getting to Sossusvlei can be challenging due to its remote location in the Namib Desert. The closest town to Sossusvlei is Sesriem, which is approximately a 4.5-hour drive from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Visitors can choose to drive themselves, hire a 4x4 vehicle, or book a guided tour. The route from Windhoek to Sesriem is well-marked, and most of the road is paved. But the final 60 kilometres are on a gravel road, which can be rough and require a 4x4 vehicle.
If you are not comfortable driving on rough terrain, it is recommended to hire a professional driver or join a guided tour. Alternatively, visitors can fly to Sossusvlei via a chartered or scheduled flight to the nearby airstrips, such as Sesriem Airstrip or Sossusvlei Desert Lodge Airstrip. From the airstrip, visitors can hire a car or arrange for a transfer to their accommodation
The wildlife in Sossusvlei includes oryx, springbok, ostriches, and desert-adapted predators such as jackals and hyenas. Bird species like the sociable weaver and the bateleur eagle can also be found in the area.
The attractions of Sossusvlei include its towering red sand dunes, scenic landscape, unique flora and fauna, hiking trails, and opportunities for stargazing and photography. The area also has a rich cultural history.
The best time to visit Sossusvlei is during the cooler months of May to September. During this time, temperatures are more comfortable for outdoor activities. The winter months of June to August are also the driest, making it easier to navigate the sandy terrain. The summer months of December to February can be extremely hot, with temperatures reaching over 100°F (40°C). However, the summer months offer the best opportunity to see migratory birds, and the occasional thunderstorm can provide dramatic photo opportunities.
Accommodations in Sossusvlei range from luxury lodges to budget-friendly camping sites. Options include tented camps, chalets, and self-catering accommodations. Many lodges offer guided activities and excursions.
There are several activities to do in Sossusvlei, including hiking, dune climbing, photography, and stargazing. The most popular hike is the challenging 5-kilometre trail up the famous Dune 45, providing a spectacular sunrise view. Visitors can also hike to the top of the world's highest sand dune, Big Daddy, which is over 325 meters high. Other activities include exploring the Sesriem Canyon, hot air balloon rides, guided wildlife tours, and stargazing under the clear desert sky.
One top tip for visiting Sossusvlei is to plan your visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the extreme heat and to capture the best lighting for photography.
