How to Get There

Getting to Sossusvlei can be challenging due to its remote location in the Namib Desert. The closest town to Sossusvlei is Sesriem, which is approximately a 4.5-hour drive from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Visitors can choose to drive themselves, hire a 4x4 vehicle, or book a guided tour. The route from Windhoek to Sesriem is well-marked, and most of the road is paved. But the final 60 kilometres are on a gravel road, which can be rough and require a 4x4 vehicle.

If you are not comfortable driving on rough terrain, it is recommended to hire a professional driver or join a guided tour. Alternatively, visitors can fly to Sossusvlei via a chartered or scheduled flight to the nearby airstrips, such as Sesriem Airstrip or Sossusvlei Desert Lodge Airstrip. From the airstrip, visitors can hire a car or arrange for a transfer to their accommodation

Wildlife

The wildlife in Sossusvlei includes oryx, springbok, ostriches, and desert-adapted predators such as jackals and hyenas. Bird species like the sociable weaver and the bateleur eagle can also be found in the area.

The summer months of December to February can be extremely hot, with temperatures reaching over 100°F (40°C). However, the summer months offer the best opportunity to see migratory birds, and the occasional thunderstorm can provide dramatic photo opportunities.
